Jozi’s largest Heritage Day celebration, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K, is back on Saturday 24 September 2022! When entering this iconic event online runners can choose to support four local charities: 1. Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD), 2. Cotlands, 3. Johannesburg SPCA and 4. Johannesburg Heritage Foundation.
“We are excited to be back in 2022,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Due to the pandemic, 2019 was the last time that this event graced the streets of Joburg. To say that we’ve missed Jozi would be an understatement. Our team is working round the clock to ensure that the 2022 event surpasses the experience of previous years. We are once again proud to support four local charities that have been doing exceptional work for the Joburg communities. These charites have been hard hit by the pandemic and we urge each runner to show their support. No donation is too small. We can’t wait to welcome runners to the start line in Joburg ready to #RunYourCity.”
Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams.
“Our goal and focus is to ensure that no child diagnosed with a life threatening illness, goes without knowing the power of a dream,” says Natalie Lazaris, Head Business at Reach For A Dream Foundation. “The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is a wonderful series for all types of runners. It has been wonderful to be part of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K as a charity. Not only does this event encourage all types of runners/walkers to come out and stay active and healthy, but it also encourages participants to give back to those in need. It speaks to the kind and generous spirits of South Africans. Event day is always fun and festive and we look forward to being a part of that once again.”

The Johannesburg SPCA is a non-profit organization that started operating in 1902 and is dependent on the kindness and support of individuals and companies.
“The Johannesburg SPCA’s dedicated team works hard to protect animals, improve animal welfare standards, educate local communities about animal care, and re-home stray, donated or abandoned animals,” says Liana Marx, Johannesburg SPCA PR, Marketing and Fundraising Manager. “Our main focus this year is to get into as many of our outreach areas as possible to assist communities with basic animal welfare issues. Funding is needed to assist us with sterilising as many pets as possible, as people in these communities don’t always have access to veterinary services, and by curbing unwanted litters from being born, we are also trying to put a stop on animal cruelty which seems to be on the rise. We are incredibly humbled by the fact that the Johannesburg SPCA has been a charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K since the event’s inception. Our message to runners is to have fun on the day, make lasting friendships and help bring our rainbow nation together. Covid has put a halt on so many lives, and an event like this is just what is needed to bring the nation together. We can’t wait to be part of the GEES!”

Cotlands is a registered non-profit organisation that focuses on early childhood development (ECD) with a rich 85-year history of serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their formative years by increasing their access to quality play-based early learning opportunities.
“Cotlands is proud to be associated with such a great fitness event where anyone and everyone can do good by running for a worthy cause,” says Dr Monica Stach, Cotlands CEO. “We have ECD programmes, namely toy libraries and early learning playgroups running in five provinces (Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape) so it is wonderful to be aligned to a sporting event that also has a national presence. The pandemic has resulted in even more young, vulnerable children with no access to early learning programmes. For us to build a brighter future for our children, we need to unite and collectively invest in access to early childhood development so that children can have the best start in life. The collective support from runners to give back to the NGO sector is so inspiring for us, as it demonstrates the public’s appreciation of the vital role that we play in servicing and developing our communities for the better.”
