Celebrating its 4th anniversary on Tuesday 24 September 2019, the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN has become known for its exciting route entertainment.  The 2019 event will be no different with the Alexandra and Soweto Field Bands and Parktown Boys’ Brass Band secured and ready to entertain the masses on National Heritage Day.

Established in 1997, the Field Band Foundation is a non-profit company that aims to use the marching band concept to provide critical life-skills to young people from under-resourced areas in seven out of nine provinces in South Africa. The ages of band members range from 10 – 21.

“The Soweto Field Band was established in 1997, while the Alexandra Field Band was established in 2000.  Both bands will be seen in action at the 2019 FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN,” says Refilwe Pico, the Field Band Foundation Communications and Events Officer.  “This will be our fourth year performing at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN.  We are excited about this because such events give our members the opportunity to showcase their musical and dancing skills. Being part of this event has been a fun and eye-opening experience for our members and we are looking forward to contributing to the ambiance on event day.  While spectators cheer for runners, we will encourage them with music and dance.  Runners (and spectators) can look forward to a vibrant, entertaining and participatory musical and dance experience that is sure to add flavour to this year’s FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN.”

Also celebrating their fourth appearance at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN, the Parktown Boys’ High School has a reputation for excellence in music as an extra-curricular activity.

According to Godfrey Bell, Master in Charge at the Parktown Boys’ High School Band, the school has a rich heritage and vibrant band.  “The band comprises of boys between the ages 13 – 17 years, with every learner being musically talented,” says Bell.  “All students are taught to play brass and reed instruments, as well as drums when they enter the school in Grade 8.  We have been participating in the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN for four years now.  This year we are looking forward to upholding and improving on our performance when entertaining the runners.  In the past runners would stop at our station to listen to our music.  We hope that they will do the same this year.  We are looking forward to yet another exciting experience with the runners.”

Starting in front of FNB Bank City, runners (and walkers) will be treated to a 10km route experience that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature lively performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups.  Iconic landmarks to look out for will include:  the Nelson Mandela Bridge, FNB Bank City, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University and Ellis Park Stadium to mention just a few.
