Jozi residents are invited to partake in a fun ‘Joburg City Clean-Up’ on Saturday, 22 September 2018 in the prelude to the 3rd annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K that will take the streets of Joburg by storm on National Heritage Day (Monday, 24 September 2018).

The “Joburg City Clean-Up” will start at 08:00 on Saturday, 22 September 2018 with volunteers meeting up at Newtown Park.

The event’s waste partner, Recycle Drive (an on-site waste management company) will collect the litter while another partner, PETCO (South Africa’s national industry body accountable for managing the PET plastic industry’s Extended Producer Responsibility) will provide the bags and gloves to be used during the clean-up.

“Recycle Drive focusses on zero waste solutions,” says Chris Erwee, Managing Director Recycle Drive.  “We are also involved in greening of events.  We are very proud to be associated with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K since its inception.  This partnership is not just about being a supplier and ensuring it is a clean event, but it’s also about giving back and going the extra mile helping where we can.  Recycle Drive, on the day, will be responsible for cleaning the route, venue and VIP areas. Waste collected will be recycled ensuring that we deliver on our promise of a greener event! During the clean-up we will assist with supplying vehicles to remove the waste as well as staff to help.  All the waste that can be recycled will be recycled through the correct channels and recorded for reporting purposes.  The recyclable materials will be taken to a recycling transfer station for further processing. Various paper and plastic products will benefit from the recyclable materials.”

According to Janine Basson, PETCO Stakeholder and Relations Manager, PETCO’s mission is to grow the collection and recycling of PET plastic, after consumer use.  “PETCO is thrilled to be involved with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K’s ‘City Clean-Up’. We believe clean-ups have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling.  PET plastic bottle recycling in South Africa is doing really well – a 65% recycling rate was reached in 2017, which means a total of 2.17 billion bottles were collected for recycling.”

“In addition to the bags and gloves that we will be sponsoring for the clean-up, we will also sponsor spot prizes which will include t-shirts and caps made from recycled plastic bottles,” continues Basson.  “By partnering with an event such as the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K, we are able to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself.”
